Schizophrenia Q & A

What is schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that causes people to interpret reality abnormally. Broadly, schizophrenia causes a combination of delusions, hallucinations, extremely disordered thinking, and behavior that makes it difficult or impossible to function normally.

What are the symptoms of schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia involves a range of symptoms that impair a person’s ability to function. These symptoms include:

Delusions

Delusions are strongly held false beliefs that may seem irrational to others. Examples include believing that you’re being harassed or targeted, that you are famous, that someone you don’t know is in love with you, or that someone is sending you messages through the television.

Hallucinations

Hallucinations occur when you see, hear, taste, feel, or smell something that isn’t there. In schizophrenia, hearing voices is the most common delusion.

Disordered thinking

This is characterized by illogical or unusual thinking and difficulty organizing thoughts and speech. Disordered thinking can cause people to stop speaking in the middle of a sentence, jump from one topic to another, poorly answer questions, and occasionally make up nonsense words.

Disordered movement

Schizophrenia can also cause extremely disorganized or unusual motor behavior or movement. This can manifest in a variety of ways, including bizarre or inappropriate postures and performing the same movements and gestures repeatedly. This can make performing tasks, following instructions, and communicating difficult.

Schizophrenia can also cause symptoms such as:

  • Neglect of personal hygiene
  • Lack of eye contact, unchanging facial expressions, and monotone speech
  • Social isolation and avoidance of others
  • Extremely low energy, sometimes resulting in a lack of movement and speech (catatonia)
  • Difficulty forming and sticking to plans
  • The inability to feel pleasure

Symptoms like these are different for everyone and may wax and wane over time or be ever-present.
